Shabbat Shalom

One of the nicest things about KAF is that there are other Jewish people besides me. We get together every Friday evening to light candles, say kiddush and Shabbat prayers and eat dinner. We are an eclectic group: one gentleman converted and is quite knowledgeable; we have a couple of people who are observing and/or thinking about converting and a few of us were raised Jewish (Reform/Conservative).

The first few weeks I was here Air Force Jeremy, who was educated at Stephen S. Wise School in L.A., led the services. His Hebrew is excellent and he sings beautifully. Unfortunately for us, Jeremy completed his deployment and returned home, so we are left with a rag-tag group of 4-6 people, muddling through the prayers and hymns. Even so, we do manage to attain a nice Shabbat feeling and enjoy dinner together.

Once a month Rabbi/Chaplain Joey Messinger visits. When Joey is here we have a complete service, discuss Torah and our numbers and spirit grow considerably. This past Shabbat we hosted a few base chaplains and chaplains' assistants. We serve MREs left over from Passover, which are actually quite tasty. This week I baked for hours (umm, actually I unwrapped some bags of Passover macaroons) so we could have cookies for dessert. We also popped a few cans of oranges and added raisins and cranberries to make fruit salad. We don't have bread, so we've been saying motzi over matzah. The "crackers" and WINE were a huge hit with our visitors.

Our usual lay leader, David W. was home on emergency family leave so he is not included in the pictures. I'll try to add later.
